Our Jesus Christ Superstar is a radical reimagining of the musical through the lens of Fred Hampton, the Black Panther Party and Black liberation movements of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

This is not a traditional production with Black performers inserted into familiar roles. It places the world of Superstar in conversation with Black American history, Black political thought, Black church traditions and revolutionary organizing—where faith, power, survival, community and resistance meet.

The biblical framework remains. The political and emotional landscape changes. In a concert-style rally, the music becomes a way to confront the promises, contradictions and human costs of collective struggle.

This is a creative interpretation informed by historical movements, not a literal depiction of Fred Hampton or a claim that the musical's characters are historical Black Panther Party members.

Jesus · The revolutionary

Jesus is imagined as a young revolutionary whose following is growing beyond his control. His message is not simply spiritual; it disrupts the status quo and invites people to imagine liberation beyond the world they have inherited.

Judas · The impossible choice

Judas sees the danger surrounding a movement that has become larger than its founders: surveillance, infiltration, state violence and the consequences of becoming a symbol. His choices emerge from a collision of love, fear, politics and ideology—not a simplistic portrait of jealousy or betrayal.

The Black Panther Party and Fred Hampton framework gives this production a political and communal context: organizing, collective care, radical education, Black self-determination, police and state power, internal conflict, and the extraordinary psychological pressure placed on movement leaders.

Our approach brings the urgency of a live concert and the collective energy of a rally into dialogue with the rock score of Jesus Christ Superstar.

It asks what communities need not only to mobilize, but to sustain one another.
